Since 1937, MUCC has been Michigan’s first voice for the outdoors. 1937 Michigan United Conservation Clubs organized.
1939 Campaigned for legislation to provide public access sites to Michigan lakes and streams with hunting and fishing license fees.
1940Stopped diversion of Game and Fish Protection Fund (mainly derived from license fees) to non-conservation purposes.
1944Campaigned for acquisition and protection of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the Upper Peninsula.
1946Began MUCC Summer Youth Camp Program.
1947Launched Michigan Out-of-Doors™ monthly conservation magazine.
1952Supported Michigan Department of Conservation program to harvest antlerless deer.
1954 Supported reintroduction of the wild turkey in Michigan.
1955 Campaigned for the protection of Great Lakes bottomlands.
1958-9 Led a two-year battle to save the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park from copper mining.
1963 Conservation Leadership Program initiated for MUCC affiliates.
1965 Supported first wild turkey hunting season in Michigan.
1966 Supported passage of U.S. Clean Water Protection Act.
1967 Supported and assisted in introduction of salmon to the Great Lakes.
1968 Campaigned for $435 million Clean Water Bond and Quality Recreation Bond in Michigan.
1970 Supported passage of Great Lakes Shorelands Protection Act.
1970 Supported implementation of Hunter Safety Training in Michigan.
1972 Supported legislation to stop indiscriminate dredging and filling of Michigan’s inland waters.
1972 Began Outdoorama 10-day sport & travel show in southeast Michigan.
1973 Led battle to ban large-mesh gill nets in the Great Lakes.
1974 Supported passage of Farmland and Open Space Preservation legislation in Michigan.
1974 Supported passage of Michigan Endangered Species Act.
1975 Supported establishment of a separate muzzleloader hunting season for Michigan deer.
1976 Led voter initiative for a beverage bottle and can deposit law in Michigan.
1976 Provided leadership to establish Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, designating oil and gas revenue from state lands for recreation.
1977 Campaigned for ban on PCBs (toxic industrial compounds) in Michigan waters.
1978 Began Tracks Magazine™, a student reader focusing on Great Lakes wildlife used across the nation.
1979 Started MUCC Wildlife Discovery Program in Michigan schools.
1979 Supported wetland protection legislation for Michigan.
1980 Participated in development of Pigeon River Country State Forest Hydrocarbon Agreement.
1984 Supported and campaigned for ban on year-round shipping on the Great Lakes.
1984 Supported controlled elk hunts in Pigeon River Country State Forest.
1986 Campaigned for wine cooler bottle deposit law in Michigan.
1987 Provided radio collars for Moose Lift II Program in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
1988 Initiated Wildlife Encounters™ Program for 1st-12th graders & adults.
1989 Campaigned for Recreational Cleanup Bond in Michigan.
1988-89 Supported Combined Sewer Overflow Program to protect Michigan water quality.
1988-95 Contributed to peregrine falcon reintroductions in Detroit and Grand Rapids.
1989 Supported ban on use of lead shot for waterfowl hunting in Michigan.
1990 Joined in starting Sportsmen Against Hunger Program in Michigan.
1990 Campaigned for passage of Hunter Harassment Protection legislation in Michigan.
1992 Supported Federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
1992 Campaigned for creation of Harbor Development Fund to improve state-owned harbors in Michigan.
1992 Campaigned to end snagging in Michigan waters.
1993 Began Michigan Out-of-Doors Television™ show on public TV across Michigan.
1994Led campaign for passage of Shooting Range Protection Act in Michigan.
1994 Led campaign to create Michigan State Park Endowment Fund and constitutional protection of Natural Resources Trust Fund.
1994 Co-signed Ludington Pumped Storage Settlement Agreement, which created the Great Lakes Fishery Trust.
1996 Led campaign for protection of scientific wildlife management in Michigan (Proposal G) and defeat of animal rights extremism (Proposal D).
1996 Led campaign for passage of legislation to retain public access at road endings on Michigan public waters.
1996 Led campaign for passage of legislation to protect Michigan anglers from harassment.
1996 Initiated Michigan Out-of-Doors™ Women Program to encourage women to participate in the outdoors.
1997 Launched campaign for zero tolerance of poaching and trespassing in Michigan.
1997 Worked with Michigan Farm Bureau for establishment of special December antlerless deer firearm season in Michigan.
2000 Negotiators in 2000 Great Lakes Tribal Fishing Agreement.
2000 Reformed and standardized Carry Concealed Weapons Statute.
2000 Opposed Prop. 002, which would have allowed local override of state firearm & environmental laws.
2001 Successfully defended new Carry Concealed Weapons Statute in MI Supreme Court.
2001 Co-sponsored first-ever Conservation Summit to create a consensus agenda for policy makers.
2001 Successfully advanced Annex 2001 to prevent diversions or exports of Great Lakes water.
2001 Kept state management of Pittman-Robertson funded lands by opposing new guidelines for field trials.
2002 Revised and improved Michigan’s Carry Concealed Weapons Statute.
2002 Successfully opposed NPS draft management plan for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore that limited hunting/fishing access, eliminated the deer herd on N. Manitou & stopped salmon stocking in the Platte River.
2002 Joined with other sportsmen groups as defendants to defeat Sierra Club lawsuit challenging expenditure of P-R funds for wildlife and habitat management.
2002 Opposed treatment of Houghton Lake with an aquatic herbicide to control Eurasian milfoil.
2002 Supported passage of Proposal 2 to improve sewer systems and increase bond revenue for local water pollution control projects.
2003 Filed for Amicus status in state and federal trials over tribal inland hunting and fishing rights.
2003 Worked to stop legislation that weakened protection of Great Lakes coastal wetlands.
2004 Led effort to complete a comprehensive audit of Michigan’s captive cervid facilities to prevent spread of chronic wasting disease.
2004 Successfully secured passage of Michigan’s first-ever dove bill by the Legislature and Governor.
2004 Played a critical role in reaching stakeholder consensus on the most environmentally protective mining law in the country.
2005 Held 1st annual Great Lakes Restoration Conference.
2005 Joined forces with NWF and Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger to establish a program funded by sportsmen to support wild game donations to the needy.
2005 Played a critical role in securing public’s right to access Great Lakes shorelines and beaches.
2005 Started MUCC Shooting Range Education and Stewardship Program to enhance lead management on MI shooting ranges.
2005 Strengthened regulations of captive cervid facilities to protect Michigan’s free-ranging deer herd.
2006 Instrumental in the passage of landmark groundwater protection legislation.
2006 Worked to bring new hunters into the sport as part of the Hunter Recruitment and Retention Workgroup.
2006 Worked effectively to block legislation that would limit or eliminate public access to recreational lands and waters.
2006 Co-chaired the Proposal One campaign which passed with historic positive vote numbers. Proposal One constitutionally protects Michigan conservation restricted funds.
2007 In partnership with the conservation community, halted legislation which would ban leg hold traps.
2007 With the help of MUCC’s volunteers, stopped a state bill that would roll back the implementation of Michigan’s new ballast water permitting law in record time.
2007 Won a lawsuit against the shipping industry to defend the new Michigan law designed to protect the Great Lakes from discharge of invasive species by ocean going vessels into Michigan’s water.
