2009 MUCC CAMP FOR KIDS
For more than 60 years, Michigan United Conservation Clubs has offered Michigan kids ages 9- 16
an amazing week-long summer camp experience. Guided by conservation values, Camp for Kids gives youth a chance to be fully immersed in enjoying and
developing an appreciation for our great outdoors.
A true Michigan experience, Camp for Kids has been hosted in many beautiful facilities across our great state; Ocqueoc, Proud Lake, Ludington State
Park, Clear Lake, Higgins Lake and Mill Lake, before finally settling into its current home at the Cedar Lake Outdoor Center located in the Waterloo
Recreation Area in Chelsea, Michigan.
This year, as we embark upon some exciting renovations to the Cedar Lake Outdoor Center, Camp for Kids will be hosted by yet another exciting camp,
Camp Wathana. This will be for the 2009 camp season only. For a map of Camp Wathana, click here.
Camp Wathana has been in the business of providing exciting outdoor programming for boys and girls for over 75 years. Located on the shores of
Green Lake, 8750 Milford Road in Holly, MI, Wathana will provide the same capstone conservation experience parents, clubs and partners have come to expect
from the MUCC Camp for Kids.
WHAT IS MUCC’S MICHIGAN OUT-OF-DOORS CAMP FOR KIDS?
The MUCC Camp for Kids is a 6-day, 5-night summer adventure designed to instill a
love for the outdoors into Michigan’s kids. Since 1946, Michigan United Conservation Clubs has helped more than 50,000 kids learn the value of
conservation while introducing them to the wonderful world they live in right here in Michigan’s great outdoors. Kids attending Camp for Kids
will experience fishing, canoeing, swimming, hiking, forestry, wildlife identification, archery and more!
Campers also learn basic firearms safety, have the opportunity to earn their hunter education certificates and learn the value of sound
conservation practices.
WHY IS THE CAMP IMPORTANT?
There is an increasing and alarming disconnect between people and the outdoors.
More and more often, people are spending their leisure time indoors, plugged into electronic devices ranging from computers to television
to iPods to video games. Statistics supporting these statements are overwhelming. From 1997 to 2003 the U.S. saw a decline by 50% in the
proportion of children age nine to twelve playing outdoors. In 2003 the average American devoted 327 more hours to electronic pursuits than in 1987.
Along with this disconnect, we are also seeing a growing lack of understanding of what kids and
their families see in nature, even in their own back yards. Many people can not longer name local wildlife and plants.
Common-sense conservation principles of wise natural resource use are no longer common or instinctive.
Today’s kids have an array of summer entertainment venues to choose from, but only MUCC’s Camp for Kids will help them learn about,
appreciate, respect and connect to Michigan’s great outdoors.
Instilling a conservation ethic in kids is a crucial step to ensuring that Michigan’s future leaders will value our natural resources.
The goal of the camp is to not only let the kids have a great time enjoying Michigan’s outdoor playground, but to also teach them the
value of conserving those resources for the future.
HOW DOES THE CAMP WORK?
There is an MUCC Camp for Kids experience available for a wide array of kids.
MUCC offers three levels of camp: Juniors (for ages 9-12*) and Regular (for ages 12*-15).
There is also one week of Advanced Camp offered for kids ages 13-16 who have previous outdoor experience.
This year's Camp for Kids will be hosted by Camp Wathana in Holly, MI.
IS IT A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR MY KIDS?
Camp Wathana, the host for MUCC’s 2009 Camp for Kids, is an American Camping Association (ACA) certified camp.
ACA certification ensures that the camp is providing the highest levels of cleanliness, safety and care for your children.
