LANSING - Executive Director of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) Dennis Muchmore has been appointed to the Michigan Climate Action Council. Governor Jennifer M. Granholm established the Michigan Climate Action Council by Executive Order 2007-42 to address and make recommendations on how Michigan can address climate change.

The Michigan Climate Action Council is comprised of 35 representatives from public interest groups, environmental organizations, utilities, the manufacturing sector and other key industries, universities, and state and local government agencies.

Governer Granholm has charged the council with:

  • producing an inventory and forecast of greenhouse gas emissions in Michigan and their sources from 1990 to 2020;
  • compiling a comprehensive state climate change action plan with specific recommendations for reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and
  • working with local units of government and institutions of higher education to assist them in meeting the challenges of climate change.
According to Muchmore “The opportunity to have input to the future environmental policies and protection of our natural resources while protecting our sportsmen’s heritage is paramount. The challenges facing our state will be addressed by this broad-based council that has the interests of Michigan’s future in the forefront.”

The first interim report from the panel is due by the end of next April, with a final detailed report due by the end of next year. With that in hand, Michigan will have a blueprint that will put us on our way to both energy efficiency and economic prosperity!
