2018 Joint Partner Habitat Day

Would you like to see more deer, turkeys and ducks when you are hunting? The secret is having high-quality habitat.

The Shiawassee State Game Area and Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge are both home to healthy populations of pheasants, deer, ducks and turkeys thanks to intensive habitat management coordinated by the Department of Natural Resources, U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and many partners. The efforts have not only increased game species, but have also increased the numbers of songbirds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

On Saturday, Aug. 18, a joint-partner Habitat Day will be held at these two pieces of public land, with Frankenmuth Conservation Club serving as the rallying point. This full-day workshop will highlight improved habitat on public land and give tips on how to achieve management goals on private property. The focus will be on improving habitat for popular game species including deer, pheasants, wild turkey and waterfowl.

Space is limited, and a $10 pre-registration is required.

The event will include educational sessions on incorporating technology into your scouting, habitat improvement work, and tours of wetland and forest wildlife habitat. Partners for the event include MUCC, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Pheasants Forever, Quality Deer Management Association, Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

This habitat day will provide a hands-on component to habitat.  We will be working in the Shiawassee State Game Area, to improve upland habitat for deer and turkey species by cutting cottonwood trees and removing overgrown willow along a stream bank.

Habitat areas include a managed water structure for waterfowl, bottomland areas in the federal refuge that are frequented by deer, and upland areas focusing on turkeys and pheasants, as well as grassland management benefits pollinators, songbirds, many game species.

This event gives the partnering organizations a chance to highlight their efforts in promoting wildlife in Michigan and showcase the values their organizations provide for Michigan hunters and wildlife enthusiasts.

Participants will walk close to 2 miles over the course of the day. Bring sunscreen, bug spray, water bottles (no single use bottles allowed at the Refuge), hiking boots and clothing appropriate for being outdoors.
