CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TODAY TO SUPPORT SB 1035

For more than 4 years, MUCC has been working hard to clarify property tax laws for charitable sportsmen’s clubs.  SB 1035 has just been sent to the floor of the Michigan House of Representatives and a vote could happen at any moment.

 

We urgently need you to contact your state representative to ask them to vote YES on SB 1035.  

 

Over the last few years, we have been troubled by reports from a number of sportsmen’s clubs that have told us that after years of being exempt from property taxes, their clubs were being taxed.  In some cases these bills were over $20,000!

 

Current state law recognizes charitable sportsmen’s clubs, but, because of the vague wording in the law, some clubs have seen their tax status change.  SB 1035 fixes that, by providing a clear, six-part test to earn an exemption.  We have also taken measures to ensure that the exemption is only available to those clubs that meet the high-bar provided in the law.  Accordingly, each club must annually apply for the exemption.

 

Sportsmen’s clubs across the state provide valuable community services free of charge.  Law enforcement agencies use these ranges for firearms certification, they serve as polling locations, provide educational training and resources to the community, and open their doors to community and service groups that need places to meet.
