MUCC supports hunter safety program in Michigan schools. Michigan United Conservation Clubs supports SB 664, HB 5334; both would create an optional program for 6th-12th graders.
SB 664 sponsored by Sen. Jon Bumstead (R-North Muskegon) and HB 5334 sponsored by Kurt VanderWall (R-Ludington) were introduced in late 2023. These bills require the Department of Education to create an optional program, in compliance with the Department of Natural Resources’ hunter safety course, that school districts can choose to implement in their schools.
The course would be available to 6th-12th-grade students in the school district, and, upon completion, successful students will have satisfied their hunter safety requirements. The legislation has bipartisan support in both chambers and is awaiting a committee hearing.
The DOE and DNR are also in support of the legislation. MUCC supports this legislation and has engaged legislators and the DNR to try to hold a hearing on it.
MUCC’s grassroots policy notes, “MUCC will work with the State Department of Education, Intermediate School Districts, and local school districts to provide access to promoting, advertising and providing information about firearm safety classes and hunter education classes at local, regional and state facilities and other range facilities open to the public.”
