Time to Register for Youth Pheasant Hunt

lschultz • February 14, 2019

Last year I was invited to join the Southern Michigan Hunting Retriever Club as they hosted their second annual youth pheasant hunt, as a hunter safety instructor.  This year once again the club is hosting this event and with some help from some great sponsors including Whitetails Unlimited and Michigan United Conservation Clubs. The Club is proud to present this free event to our next generation of hunter-conservationists and hunting retriever enthusiasts.

This event is limited to the first 24 registered participants ages 12-17. All youth hunters must have completed the Michigan Hunter Safety Education course and be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone.

Club members and other mentors will be on hand to assist the young hunters and their guardians. The hunt will take place at Bear Creek Hunt Club located at 12670 Beecher Hwy, Clayton, MI.

There were two groups of participants.  While one group is hunting the other group will be learning about dog handling and duck calling. Each group will have some practice time shooting clay targets before heading out on their bird hunt.

More information on the club can be found on the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/smihrc/

Oaks are a critical tree species for wildlife in Michigan as they provide food, cover, and long-term habitat in forests, field edges, and public lands. Both red oaks and white oaks are native to Michigan, but there are differences in management between the species, making an impact on conservation and hunting success. The growth patterns are important to understand when planning for land management due to variation in growth, acorn production (mast), and wildlife use.
