Education Corner: TRACKS for Christmas

With Thanksgiving behind us and deer and waterfowl season winding down that can only mean Christmas gift hunting/shopping season is here! The average American is going to spend nearly $1,000 dollars on holiday gifts this year. Here at MUCC we have a much more cost-effective method on a great gift for the kids or grandchildren in your life.

A subscription to TRACKS Magazine!

Tracks Magazine is a publication supported and written by the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. This magazine focuses on the wildlife and natural resources of the great State of Michigan.

TRACKS Magazine is published for 8 months during the year. Excluding the months of June, July, August, and September.  The magazine is targeted at upper elementary school students and can be found in classrooms across the United States.  The Information in TRACKS is consistent with the classroom science standards for the state of Michigan. TRACKS highlights a different Michigan animal each month and is loaded with information about habitats, ecology, zoology, and conservation.  Aside from all of this great information about the animal, there is also a poster of the animal for each month included.

To top it off each magazine also has an activity and quiz that your children can do to learn more about the environment around them. Personally, my favorite part of TRACKS is each issue has a few animal jokes that I enjoy making my friends laugh with.

With a subscription rate of over 21,000 readers TRACKS is found in many classrooms throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes region. However, you can also subscribe to tracks as a family/individual for the price of $10 per year.

Animals we have already covered this year include the osprey, the blue racer, and December’s animal is the spring peeper.

To subscribe please call 1-800-777-6720 and we will get you signed up today so your kids can start receiving the next great issue!

Hi. I am a teacher at Fennville Elementary and our fourth grade team receives your magazine. It’s a great resource! I am wondering if you’d be able to donate your magazines to my class (about 30 students) or even to our grade level (about 110 students)? Please let me know. Thanks so much!

      Hi Ashley,

Thanks for reaching out. TRACKS magazine is done for the year as school is out but we would be happy to add you to the list, for next year. Throughout a grant with the Kalamazoo River Foundation, we have sponsored 300 TRACKS to the Fennville Public schools in 2018. Right now we are sending 100 to the Middle School and we are sending 200 to the elementary school to the care of Principal Lombard. If you would like an additional 100ish to cover next years 4th graders we should be able to do that.

Thanks for reaching out and supporting our programs

What grade levels is this appropriate for? I have several teachers at my school interested but wanted to see which would be best able to use Tracks.

    Thanks!

      Hello,

TRACKS is targeted at upper elementary school kids. 4-5 primarily, but it is often used by middle school teachers to help students who are reading below grade level as a way to engage them and get the kids to start reading a bit more.

If your school is interested you can call Sue Pride our Membership Coordinator at 1-800-777-6720 or 517-371-1041 and she will get your school taken care of.

      Thanks

I am a 4th grade teacher in Kelloggsville Public Schools. One of my colleagues was gifted your magazine for years. Since she has retired, I am no longer able to use this fantastic resource with my 30 4th grade students. Is it possible to add my name to the list? Thank you for your consideration!
