UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE WILDLIFE HABITAT WITH MUCC AUGUST 2017

Keep an eye out for more opportunities to improve wildlife habitat in your most treasured public land areas coming up in August. Volunteers with MUCC’s Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program have completed 17 projects throughout the state for the current cycle already, but there will be a handful more projects in August and September. So far this cycle, a total of 402 volunteers have collectively dedicated over 98 hours to the restoration of 445 acres of wildlife habitat on public land! Thank you for your contribution to conservation! Keep up to date with the latest wildlife habitat improvement events at www.mucc.org/ontheground.

WHERE: Inspiration Point-Pigeon River Country State Forest

On Friday, August 11th at 9 AM, we will be joining the NCCC Crew in the Pigeon River Country State Forest to complete a restoration project at Inspiration Point. We will be cutting down remaining trees in the area (aside from Hawthorne) up to about 6 ft in height. Loppers and handsaws will be used to cut the small trees and a stump treatment will be applied as well. A prescribed burn was conducted in the area this spring to knock down woody vegetation; volunteers will be cutting what the fire missed.

All tools, safety gear, water and lunch will be provided for volunteers as well as a free T-Shirt. Please contact stopp@mucc.org with any questions and RSVP here to volunteer for wildlife in the Pigeon River Country!

WHERE: Melstrand GEMS

On Saturday, August 26th at 9 AM we will be meeting at the Melstrand Kiosk off of Hwy 58 located Northeast of Munising (GPS Coordinates: 46.451306, -86.432694). We will be planting 150 trees and shrubs donated from the Alger County UP Whitetails. The Ruffed Grouse Society’s AVS Machine will be on site and will present an opportunity for a demo nearby after the event. Various groups such as Ruffed Grouse Society, UP Whitetails, Michigan Sharp Tail Association and MUCC will be collaborating on this project.

There will be a group camping for the weekend near Gemini Lake (or at one of the several campgrounds nearby) for the weekend running dogs. There is good Ruffed Grouse habitat near by and Sharp tail cover not too far from there as well as great trout fishing. Everyone is invited and welcome to camp for the weekend with the group.

Please contact stopp@mucc.org or Jesse Zimmerman at jessejames23@gmail.com with any questions and RSVP here to volunteer!
